Gotta Lovitz!

I’m not one to harp on celebrity gossip, personally I find it kind of sad. I feel that celebrity obsession is one of the root causes of ignorance in America. The media only makes it worse by placing celebrities on a pedestal as if they were royalty. Well, they’re not. They’re not even close. Somewhere along the way the media got things a little topsy-turvy when they conjured the mentality that people like Paris Hilton and Tara Reid are more newsworthy than the war in Iraq or any of the 34 scandals of the Bush Administration.

Every now and then a story comes out that isn’t mired with the usual obsession of celebrities and their detritus. In fact, the following story makes me smile so much that it literally hurts: Jon Lovitz beat up Andy Dick.

Jon Lovitz beat up Andy Dick last week at the Laugh Factory after Dick made a comment about the murder of Lovitz’ SNL friend, Phil Hartman. Apparently last year Andy Dick went up to Jon Lovitz and, according to Lovitz, “looked at me and said, ‘I put the “Phil Hartman hex” on you - you’re the next one to die.’ I said, ‘What did you say?’ and he repeated it. I wanted to punch his face in, but I don’t hit women.” Then when the two ran into each other at the Laugh Factory last Wednesday, Lovitz was expecting an apology for the comment and when he didn’t get one he flipped out.

UPDATE: New details have been released.

Apparently Dick was the one who gave Brynn Hartman cocaine at a 1997 Christmas party after she had been sober for 10 years. Five months later she killed her husband, Phil Hartman, Lovitz’s “SNL” castmate and close friend, then herself.

Lovitz says he reminded Dick of this when Lovitz was brought on to “NewsRadio,” as Hartman’s replacement.

Last week Lovitz finally confronted Dick about the hex and Dick said he said it because “you said I killed Phil Hartman … which I never said. Then he asked me to be in his new movie.

“I grabbed him by the shirt and said ‘I don’t want to be in your movie! I don’t want to be in your life! Then I pushed him against the rail. Then I pushed him again really hard. I’m not proud of it … but he’s a disgusting human being.”

I can’t recall a more poetic tale of someone getting exactly what they deserve. What makes it even better is that of all the people that have probably wanted to beat the shit out of Andy Dick over the years, it was Jon Lovitz. Jon Lovitz! How great is that? Lovitz and Dick have had a long professional history. It was Jon Lovitz who replaced Phil Hartman on “Newsradio” after Hartman’s tragic death.

On my list of famous people who I can’t stand, if I were to have such a thing, Andy Dick would be at the very top. The person who would come after Andy Dick would be Kathy Griffin, who I’m pretty sure is just Andy Dick in drag.

Three cheers for Jon Lovitz!
Lovitz!
