How We Read Online

We’re all lazy when it comes to reading online, at least according to Slate’s Michael Agger. We like short paragraphs, bold, bullets, hyperlinks, and sentence fragments. An absurd majority hates scrolling. Ironically, it is a really great read and it goes by fairly quick.

Lazy Bastards: How We Read Online

Oddly enough, Agger doesn’t go into detail over paginated webpages. I can’t stand clicking, especially when I’m reading an article that’s divided onto multiple pages (I’m looking at you New York Times). He also suggests not to use puns. What does he know…

Not to link-jack or anything, but Agger links to an essay by media critic William Powers which details (at great length) why paper, or as Powers describes it “an anchor for the consciousness,” will never be permanently replaced. It’s for hardcore readers only.
