Nick going dark

Nickelodeon plans to go dark for three hours this Saturday in an effort to get kids to go outside and play. That’s all well and good but what about the kids in wheelchairs, or the fat kids, or the grounded kids, or the kids in places where it’s raining? I can’t believe Viacom signed off on this. Maybe they’ll have popup ads for Pop-tarts during the blackness.

Mr. Wizard dies at 89

Long before Bill Nye or Beakman’s World, there was Mr. Wizard on Nickelodeon. As a kid I always wished I could have had a science teacher like him. They don’t have shows for kids like this anymore.

Interesting side note: Copyright of Mr. Wizard’s World is now held by a corporation that prohibits the free distribution to today’s youth.

Los Angeles Times:

Don Herbert, who explained the wonderful world of science to young baby boomers on television in the 1950s and ’60s as “Mr. Wizard” and did the same for a later generation of youngsters on the Nickelodeon cable TV channel in the 1980s, died today. He was 89.
