SNL Sofa King Sketch….
A year too late….?
Last night SNL featured a skit about a a furniture store called Sofa King. It was supposed to be a commercial but, like most SNL skits, it ran a little too long. The line that got the biggest laugh was “It’s Sofa King cheap.” Now, I know this is by no means an original joke - I first heard the “Sofa King we todd id” joke back in middle school, but seriously SNL, is that all you could come up with for last night? We made this in Studio B at Emerson almost a year ago!
Below is the original video project, starring David Alfano and William Fu, that I wrote last summer and uploaded to You Tube on 8/10/06. There are a few similarities between the two, especially with the map at the end of the commercial. Instead of featuring the Sofa King, SNL’s had a clueless Turkish family. Maya Rudolph has a great unibrow but I feel like she is the same character in every skit. I hope someone will upload SNL’s version so that I can share it for everyone to compare.
Perhaps the best part is that people have been googling “sofa king” and “snl sofa king” all morning. But since the SNL skit is not active on google yet, most of these googlers have ended up at Megorious. So far this morning, Megorious has had more than 70 hits by people searching for the SNL version. Hilarious.
So, what does this mean? Nothing. Except that I should be writing for SNL.
SNL’s Sofa King | Our Sofa King Skit.
TUESDAY UPDATE
After more than 1000 hits in the last 24 hours, Megorious is the top search result on Google for those searching for “SNL sofa king.” What’s funnier is that one website has asked the question “Did SNL “steal” SOFA KING joke off You Tube?” in regards to this video from January 2007.
As I said yesterday, I don’t think SNL stole the joke because the Sofa King joke has been around since at least middle school. But there is a difference in telling the joke between the original idea, as seen in this Aqua Teen Hunger Force clip and turning the joke into a furniture store called Sofa King.
Yesterday on YouTube, our Sofa King video got a comment from someone who thought we ripped it off of the SNL one. Seriously, some people are just sofa king retarded.

If it’s stolen, then at least they improved it a lot

yeah, and you stole it from an early 90’s Howard Stern bit that was classic and still funnier than either

I agree, its not very original, but it still incredibly funny. I don’t know why the simple, old jokes make me laugh so much…
